Nuclear Physics Department

• Experiments at EUROBALL and GASP to study rotational band structures and their electromagnetic transition strengths. A specific goal is  the magnetic rotation , a new elementary excitation mode found in nearly spherical nuclei and the chiral rotation predicted for triaxially deformed nuclei.
   
• Investigations of NZ nuclei around the mass number A=70 produced in fusion-evaporation reactions with the aim to observe neutron-proton pairing effects besides the known  T=1 pairing between like particles. The  selection of  the weak production channnels for these nuclides  requires the use of  ancillary detectors  ( e. g. the Silicon detector ball RoSiB ) in addition to the gamma detection at EUROBALL .
  
  
• NRF experiments to study dipole excitations. The investigations are performed in close collaboration with the university groups in Darmstadt, Köln and Stuttgart  using the existing bremsstrahlung beams at the S-DALINAC and the DYNAMITRON accelerators. In future, a polarized photon source will be available for  NRF experiments at the bremsstrahlung ( NRF ) facility of the  ELBE accelerator  in Rossendorf.
   
• ISOL experiments at the UNILAC of the GSI Darmstadt for measuring the properties of proton-rich exotic nuclei in collaboration with the nuclear physics department at GSI. The on-line mass separation technique will be combined with beta-delayed gamma detection in order to get more information on NZ nuclei. Common experiments are planned at the fragment separator FRS of SIS,  where such nuclides can be  produced by fragmentation.

 
• The Tilted Axis Cranking Model ( TAC ) as the theoretical framework to describe the spin orientation degrees of freedom and the breaking of the mirror symmetries in rotating nuclei.  The phenomena magnetic and chiral rotation result from this model.
   
• Quantum corrections beyond the mean field approximation. Correlation effects are treated in the small amplitude limit  by the Random Phase Approximation. For the  restoration of broken symmetries a new state mixing approach is developed.
   
• Metallic clusters. Stability and magnetic properties of these mesoscopic systems are investigated by  theoretical methods developed for nuclear systems.
