Research in the Heart of Europe

The FZD considerably contributes to the following questions of research and development:

  • How does matter behave in strong fields and at small dimensions?
  • How can cancerous tumors be identified in the early stages and treated effectively?
  • How can the public and the environment be protected from technical risks?

The answers to these questions are dealt with in the three research programs of the FZD:

  • Advanced Materials Research
  • Cancer Research
  • Nuclear Safety Research

Six unique large-scale research facilities are available for the scientists at Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf; however, external users are invited to apply for experiments!

  • Radiation Source ELBE with High-Intensity Laser and Free-Electron Lasers
  • Ion-Beam Center
  • High-Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD)
  • PET-Center
  • TOPFLOW-Facility
  • Rossendorf Beamline (ROBL) at the ESRF in Grenoble

Technology transfer

This is an important matter for us! Ideally, results from research are transferred into technological applications.

Research sites - Dresden, Leipzig, Grenoble

The FZD's main campus is located in Dresden. Besides, we operate the Research Site Leipzig as well as the Rossendorf Beamline at the European Synchrotron (ESRF) in Grenoble/France.

Research for the general public

This is a project which is performed by the FZD with pupils of the 11th and 12th form. The Internet pages you will find here are made "by pupils for pupils". In addition to the research facilities Radiation Source ELBE, Free-Electron Laser, High-Intensity Laser, and Ion-Beam Centre, themes likes the origin of the elements are explained for the general public. These websites are in German only.
